I grabbed a pack of 9 little canvases (they are 4x4) that I will be using to create little textured pumpkins. This is such a fun and easy fall project, and these little canvases make perfect gifts or shelf-sitters in your home! We will add modeling paste, paint them, add a glazing medium, and then apply resin with seed beads and glass. I love the way each of these colorful pumpkins turned out!
I am going to sketch my pumpkin onto my canvas with a pencil. This will help guide you as you go. These are super simple to draw - sketch a stem, then an egg, and parentheses on each side of your egg.
Next, I am going to use a little palette knife to apply my modeling paste. Start with the stem and use the back of your palette knife to add the paste. Then, continue adding plaster to one section of your pumpkin at a time. Let this dry overnight.
Now, you can paint your pumpkins! I am going to start by painting my first one with Dragonfruit pink. I am going to add a base coat of pink and then blend in some white to give it some highlights and some Cherry Red for some shadows. I'll also paint my stem with Avocado Green and Raw Umber.
You can paint your pumpkins whatever colors you would like! Just be sure to add in some other colors to create that three-dimensional look with shadows and highlights.
At this point, you can add the glazing medium if you would like, or just keep them painted. I used Liquitex Slow Dry Medium and mixed that with about 20 drops of Traditional Burnt Umber acrylic paint. Start by quickly applying it with a paintbrush to the sides of your canvas and then wipe it off with a cloth. Continue doing this to the front as well, but make sure you wipe it flat in one direction. That way the medium will stick in those little crevices and give it that antique look.
We're going to elevate our canvas using blocks. Mix your resin and stir gently for three minutes. Pour the resin onto your canvas and spread it using your gloved fingers or brush.
Use a heat gun to pop your bubbles. Keep your heat moving at all times!
Then, add whatever seed beads or glass that you would like!
