I am using a wooden canvas for this art piece, which means it is very porous. Start by adding three coats of Americana Buttermilk to your background. Lightly sand your canvas in between coats.
Grab your tracer, tape it to your canvas, place graphite paper underneath, and trace your flag with a stylus.
Paint your stripes with red paint and white paint, and paint the square with blue paint. You will need to add multiple coats to get the coverage you would like! Add lighter blue paint as well as white paint to create some dimension in the folds. I'll also add black paint to create shadows. Do the same thing with your red stripes by blending in white paint while it is still wet. Blend in light blue paint on the top line of each white stripe.
For the top part of our canvas, we are going to apply a scripted writing stamp. First, tape off the area where your painted flag is so you don't get any ink on it. Then, press the stamp onto an ink pad. It's okay if this is not perfect and stamps the entire thing - you want a more rustic look!
I'm going to apply an antiquing glaze to this too. Take a small cup of Liquitex Slow-Dri Medium and add a few drops of Tradiitonal Burnt Umber. Use a paintbrush to apply the mixture to your art piece and then wipe it off with a t-shirt cloth. Dry it with a heat tool.
Use a graphic pen to add detail lines to your flag with short, quick strokes.
Next, let's add our glass! I have clear glass strips that I had cut from a piece of glass shelf that I will use to form a cross. I have one long piece and several shorter pieces. Use tacky glue to attach the long glass strip on it's edge in the center of the art piece. Then, glue two shorter pieces together to form one side of your cross, and do the same thing for the other side. Glue an two extra glass strips to your long vertical piece as well.
Add a glass chip to the center of your cross. I also have acrylic stars that I will add to my blue square. Drop a handful of Starfire glass to the background of your cross.
We're going to elevate our canvas using blocks. Mix 2 oz total of ArtResin and stir gently for three minutes. Pour the resin onto your glass and canvas and use your gloved fingers or brush to spread it over the entire canvas.
Use a heat gun to pop your bubbles. Keep your heat moving at all times!
