For this project, I'm making a witch's broomstick to add to my art piece. You can use a stick from your yard or grab one from a craft store (I used some from Hobby Lobby). Start by cutting a bunch of raffia to your desired length. Gather the raffia and secure the end with jute twine, tying it in a knot. Add a small dab of tacky glue to the knot, then continue wrapping the twine around it. Next, insert your stick into the raffia bundle and secure it with more twine, adding glue as needed to hold everything in place. I'll also swipe some gray and black paint along the handle.
Now, let's move on to painting the background! Begin by applying white paint in circular motions to the bottom left corner of your canvas—this will be the spot for your pumpkin, so we want it to be lighter. Next, blend Americana Camel around the edges of this light area, pulling the color down into the left corner. To finish, add Americana Grey Storm to the outer edges and blend it diagonally for a smooth transition. Dry with a heat tool.
I want to paint a surface for my pumpkin to sit on, so I'll swipe white and gray paint along the bottom area of my canvas. Dry again.
Grab your tracer, tape it to your canvas, place graphite paper underneath, and trace your pumpkin with a stylus.
Next, we'll paint the pumpkin one section at a time. Begin by applying gray paint to a section, and while it's still wet, blend in some black. Repeat this process for each section of the pumpkin. Once done, dry the paint with a heat tool. Then, blend Metallic Pearl and Metallic Silver over each section and dry again.
Using a dry brush, dip one side into Metallic White and gently swipe it along each pumpkin section. Repeat this technique with black paint on the opposite side. To add a distressed effect, use a palette knife to dab white paint along each section of the pumpkin.
Using a round brush and Raw Umber, paint the pumpkin stem by rolling the brush in the paint until it forms a point, then gently trace the shape of the stem. To add depth, apply Milk Chocolate paint in a few areas for an extra layer of color. Finally, add a touch of white paint along one side of the stem to create a highlight. Dry with a heat tool.
Use a graphic pen to outline your pumpkin stem. I'll use a black Posca Pen to outline my pumpkin and pumpkin sections because it will show up better.
Now, let's add glass! I am going to add Silver Reflective glass to the darkest areas of my pumpkin sections.
We're going to elevate our canvas using blocks. Mix 1 oz total of ArtResin and stir gently for three minutes. Pour the resin onto your glass and canvas and use your gloved fingers or brush to spread it over the entire canvas. Use a heat gun to pop your bubbles. Keep your heat moving at all times!
I'll sprinkle Miyuki Crystal seed beads onto the glass areas of my pumpkin for added texture. Next, drizzle resin onto the side of the broomstick that will attach to the canvas, then position the broomstick so it leans against the pumpkin. Apply more resin over the broomstick handle to secure it in place.
